SPEAKERS
Barbara Logan is a trainer and consultant with the Efficacy Institute. The Efficacy Institute is a not-for-profit training and consulting Massachusetts based organization committed to developing all children to high standards, especially children of color and the economically disadvantaged. Proficiency for “All” Children
This presentation is based on a very simple idea: virtually all of our children have enough intellectual capacity for challenging, complex work. The Efficacy Institute’s approach is grounded in the constructive belief that intellectual capacity is neither fixed nor given; rather it can be built – to high levels – through the sustained application of effective effort at challenging tasks. That means the primary work of every adult who cares about children – in schools, families and community institutions – is to develop the intellectual capacity of every child. The Efficacy Institute will present a concrete strategy for change, focused on three areas: an exploration of academic proficiency and strong character as the proper standards, that is, the targets we are trying to hit; an examination of beliefs about intellectual capacity, and how they set the terms for educational policies and practices; and a simple approach to actually using data to drive improvements in instruction.
Charles Haynes of the First Amendment Center in Fairfax, VA. (More bio...)
Why Freedom Works: The First Amendment, Public Schools, and the Future of American Democracy
The five freedoms protected by the First Amendment are the cornerstone of American democracy and essential for citizenship in a diverse society. Public schools must not only teach the First Amendment, they must also model and apply the priciples of freedom they are charged with teaching. Properly understood and practiced, the rights and resonsibilities of the First Amendment provide the civic framework for creating public schools that are both safe and free.
Cynthia Board Schmeiser, President and COO, Education Division ACT. (More bio...)
Rigor at Risk: Reaffirming Quality in the High School Core Curriculum
ACT's latest research examines the impact of a core preparatory curriculum on college and work readiness. This presentation will focus on the results of ACT's research, explore the mixed messages that we are sending to our high schools, and offer insights from effective classrooms that are making substantial difference in preparing students for college and work.
Bruce Hunter, Associate Executive Director of Public Policy for AASA. He will give us an update on what is happening at the federal level legislatively and take us on an interesting historical tour with an insightful and humorous perspective. (More bio...)
