Congratulations to Dr. Tina Kerr, 2012 Michigan Superintendent of the Year

Tine Kerr wins Superintendent of the YearDr. Tina Kerr, in only her second year as superintendent of Coldwater Community Schools (CCS), received what might just be the surprise of her life this week.

Executive Director William H. Mayes visited the CCS Board of Education meeting November 21, 2011, to announce that Kerr had been named 2012 Michigan Superintendent of the Year.

“This is a most prestigious honor,” said Mayes during the presentation. “You can be proud to have been chosen from a group of highly qualified nominees. It is clear to me—as it was to our selection committee—that Tina Kerr is a new-generation leader who has re-built strained relationships, set bold academic goals, and energized a community around education.”

The Superintendent of the Year Award is presented by MASA to one member who has shown tremendous effort and dedication to enriching the lives of children and the community as a whole. Dr. Kerr is recognized for her energetic leadership that is renewing pride and hope in the district, and is raising expectations for students.

“Not only has Dr. Kerr renewed Cardinal Pride, she has also been an advocate for improving the entire community of Coldwater,” wrote Coldwater Board of Education President Robin Iveson in her nomination letter. “Her energy seems boundless, and in her ‘spare time’ she has found ways to spread that positive energy.”

Dr. Kerr was selected by a distinguished panel representing Michigan’s various education stakeholders, including the Michigan Board of Education, parents, business officials, school boards, principals, and higher education. MASA will recognize Kerr at its Midwinter Conference in Detroit in January 2012. She will have opportunities throughout the year to address superintendents statewide, and her name will be inscribed on a commemorative plaque on display at the MASA office in Lansing.
